Some of My Favorite Money Savers

While speaking with friends (both in person and online) lately, it seems our discussions usually turn to budgets and ways to stretch a dollar! So I told a couple of friends that I would share some of my favorite programs and ways to save a few dollars.   Most of them revolve around printable coupons or similar services.

My favorite is Coupons.com. They seem to have a great variety and I've never had a problem printing the coupons or using them (I have had difficulties printing coupons from some of the other online sources, so easy printing is a definite plus with coupons.com!). Right now there are coupons for such products as: Reynolds Wrap, Del Monte Vegetables, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, Neutrogena Hair Care, Nature Valley Granola Bars, Betty Crocker Cookie Mix, Chex Mix Bars (these are soooo good, by the way!), Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Pedialyte....to mention a few!

You can also find lots of great printable coupons by surfing around the internet, especially blogs (I try to share lots of them here too!).

Another great way to use coupons is to load them straight onto your grocery store loyalty program. This is especially great for people (like my parents....hint hint) who always forget to clip and take their coupons to the store with them. By loading them onto your loyalty card, there is no need to tote coupons with or sort them. Of course, the selection of coupons available is much smaller and they do not double. But this is a great way for a non-coupon user to save a few dollars. Even coupon users will find it a great help to load some deals onto their loyalty card. My favorite programs for this are:

P&G Esavers- These are available for a wide variety of Proctor & Gamble products.   The stores which these work at are usually Kroger related or Safeway. Just register your loyalty card and start loading your deals.

Shortcuts: I love this site because it offers a good variety of product deals, including Kroger discount coupons. Since Kroger products are usually less expensive anyway, the coupons can make for some really inexpensive items! This seems to only be valid for the Kroger chain of stores.

Cellfire: This is a newer service which allows you to load coupons onto your loyalty card or your wireless phone!    This seems to have less variety as far as grocery coupons (only valid at Kroger chain of stores) but also has offers at some restaurants, video rental shops, etc.   To use this you have to sign up with your wireless phone and wait for a text message which activates your account. You can choose though not to have further communication sent to you via wireless phone.

Upromise: This works a bit different than the above offers. With Upromise E-coupons, instead of deducting the coupon amount from your total and reducing your bill, that amount in put into your child's Upromise college savings account. This is a great way to set aside a few dollars for college. If you haven't checked out Upromise, it's worth taking a look at it. The service is free and even if you only save $100 over the next 5 years, that $100 can pay for a college textbook!

We use meal planning to help stretch our food budget even further. This allows us to use what we have stocked up in our pantry and freezer, plus what is on sale each week, to be able to make nutritious and delicious meals for a large family while sticking to our budget. If you are eating out, check out websites such as Kidseatfreeplaces.com to help reduce that expense! Even on a tight budget, we like to be able to treat ourselves out for dinner occasionally. By going to a restaurant that offers a kids eat free special, we can reduce the expense and make it more manageable.

So, those are some basic tips on how we save a few dollars each month!
